The Base Chakra

The first or base chakra is situated at the base of the spine.  It is also known as the ‘root chakra’.  The Sanskrit name is the Muladhara Chakra.
The base chakra sends its energy into and out of the main ‘river’ of energy, called the susumna, which flows up and down the spine.  From here it flows to the whole body, as does the energy from all the chakras.

When this centre is working well it gives us feelings of being energetic, active, and lively.  Our survival instincts and also the desire to have children (the instinct to reproduce) come from this centre.  We feel ‘grounded in reality’, rather than living life in a dream world, when we are well connected through this centre. The story illustrating the base chakra is about survival.
